ChessClue is the ultimate card-based game for learning and mastering chess, designed for ages 4 to 99. With 320 unique cards, ChessClue turns every lesson into a game, making it the perfect tool for kids, beginners, and even experienced players looking to sharpen their skills.

Modules for All Skill Levels

ChessClue offers three distinct modules, each tailored to a specific skill level. Draw cards from different modules to create a custom game for each player, no matter their chess experience.

  • Fundamentals Module: Covers piece movements, rules like castling and en passant, and basic checkmates.
  • Intermediate Module: Teaches tactics like forks, pins, and familiarizes players with classic mating patterns.
  • Advanced Module: Focuses on advanced tactics, multi-move strategies, and complex mating patterns for experienced players.
  • 320 unique cards for 1 to 8 players, suitable for ages 4 to 99.
  • Covers everything from basic piece movements to advanced tactics and expert strategies.
  • Adaptable for different skill levels, from beginner to expert.
  • Family-friendly, inclusive for girls, and ideal for clubs and schools.

Whether you’re playing solo, with friends, or in a classroom, ChessClue makes chess fun, engaging, and accessible for all!

Why ChessClue?

Learning chess can feel daunting, especially for kids and beginners.

ChessClue breaks down the game into easy-to-digest lessons, each in the form of a fun challenge on a card. From the rules of the game to complex strategies, ChessClue grows with you, offering levels to engage kids, beginners, and even experienced players.

ChessClue offers parents and teachers a structured, engaging way to teach chess to kids while also providing advanced players with an effective method to train complex tactics, positional play, and strategies.

How to Play ChessClue?

1. Set Up the Game

  • Shuffle the Action Cards into the card stacks.
  • Place the three card stacks with question side up (Beginner, Intermediate, and Advanced) in the center of the table.
  • Arrange the Gemstones nearby as rewards for completing challenges.
  • Each player chooses a card stack based on their skill level.

2. Draw a Card

  • On each turn, a player draws a card from their chosen skill level stack and reads the challenge or question.
  • Answer the question, solve the puzzle or execute the Action Card mission to the best of your ability.

3. Score Points

  • If the player answers correctly, they earn the points shown on the card and take the card. The corresponding card value can be taken as Gemstones.
  • If the answer is incorrect, the card must be placed back at the bottom of the deck. It's the next players turn.
  • Action Cards are always placed back at the bottom of the deck after each turn.

4. Win the Game

  • The game can end after a set number of rounds or when a player first reaches a target score.
  • The player with the most points wins, and everyone celebrates their progress!

Additional Tips

  • The cards include a question on one side and a solution on the other. Cards are worth between 1-5 points based on difficulty.
  • Mix up the difficulty levels and Action Cards for a more challenging game.
  • For younger players, focus on Beginner cards and encourage them with frequent Gemstone rewards.
  • The fundamental topics in the questions are building up on each other.  The first games should be played with cards in that order. The cards are numbered.

Why it works?

Color Coding
Intuitive color-coded visuals on the chessboard make information easy to understand and follow.

Limited Answer Options
Basic questions use simplified answer choices, such as YES/NO or RED/BLUE square selections, to make learning more accessible.

Structured Learning Approach
Each topic is covered through three progressive question types:

  • Understand – Basic questions with limited answers for foundational learning.
  • Try – Intermediate questions with moderate complexity to encourage exploration.
  • Apply – Advanced questions with higher complexity for real-game application.

Comprehensive Topic Coverage
Topics are designed to build on each other, covering every aspect of the game in a logical, step-by-step progression.

Meet the Creators of ChessClue

We’re Simon and Janine Rückert, a chess-loving family that designed ChessClue to share our love for the game with others. Our goal is to make learning chess accessible and enjoyable for all ages.

Girls in Chess

Only 9 percent of active chess players worldwide are female, which in turn leads to fewer girls starting to play chess, and so on. By providing materials, teaching, and communication that are also girl-friendly, this can gradually change through increasing role models.

It is important not to undermine the abilities of girls in playing chess compared to male players. We firmly believe that this notion is untrue, yet such thoughts can unconsciously affect their confidence and hinder their personal growth.

Girls tend to place more value on community, friendship, communication, and emotions. ChessClue seeks to contribute by considering the needs of girls and boys equally in terms of content, graphics, and methodology.

Here are some examples of how it has made a difference designing the concept: colors, images, content of questions and answers,  game points, logo, certificates and gemstones.
